This building housed the laundry at the Chirnside Mansion. A tall hedge surrounds the courtyard where the washing was hung out to dry, it’s purpose was to shield the occupants eyes from seeing anything considered to be too offensive…. imagine the shock!

  1. Oh, the shock! The shock of seeing unmentionables! Funny that they had a big hedge to hide the view. Does that mean they didn’t hang unmentionables on the line until the hedge grew tall enough? Prudes!

  2. I like your presentation of this set of pics. Especially interesting is the inside view of the wash house. It looks like it must have been quite an assembly line of laundresses working to get those unmentionables clean….
